In her drawings and sculptures Sara Greet Gilis investigates ancestry, identity and memory.
In doubt about what was and is her real home, she creates notions of ‘home’ in her art. She often finds her work turning into symbolic, surreal or mythical shapes and personae connected to icons she finds in nature, religion and family.
Her work exists through her body. She uses it as a tool, a carrier, a medium, a place, an object, a subject, to surface all it remembers. Pain and endurance, invisible in the image, are key aspects to her work.
Although very still, her work contains riot. It holds the contrast between revolt and acceptance, concealing and revealing, present and absent, male and female, approachable and unreachable, conscious and subconscious.
